How did your experiences with education set you up for a career? What choices did you make? What advice can you give to people starting out at the beginning of their working life?

My experience in education guided me into an area which i didnt really enjoy. Studying the wrong subject which in the end really wasnt for me. Always keep your mind open in what you want to do! There's always another option.

It is important to remember that you can always change your mind.
For instance, if you don't get the grades you want, you can always resit exams.
If you want to change track you can always study in evening classes or by distance learning.
If you and school education don't fit, home education is a legal and more adaptable option --and may open up the opportunity to study subjects for which there is little or no provision within the National Curriculum.
If left school at 16 and worked in a shop for 3 years. I then decided I wanted a career, got some A levels at evening classes and went on to get a degree and a Ph.d.
Life is full of choices, and it is never too late to make them.

My education didn't force me any particular direction, but there was an assumption that the bright kids would go to university.

I agree, academic education isn't always the right route. I dropped out of uni in my second year to become an electrician and now I'm making great money and I really enjoyed the training
